Traveling to Italy with a kid can be an exciting and enriching experience. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine, Italy offers something for everyone. In this travel guide, we will take you through our leisurely two-week itinerary, which includes visits to Rome, Florence, Bologna, Venice, a small and sunny village in Tuscany, and Milan.
Rome (5 days)
Our trip began in the eternal city of Rome. We explored its iconic landmarks, such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, St. Peters Basilica, and Vatican City, for five days. We stayed in a nice Airbnb close to the Colosseum. Our host Livia arranged a pick-up from the Rome International Airport. We highly recommend spending some time in Rome to get out of jetlag if you are flying out of Europe. Our little one was fascinated by the ancient ruins and enjoyed exploring the city on foot. We also made sure to indulge in some delicious breakfast and gelato along the way. We walked around 15000 steps a day and fortunately the kid didn’t complain since we took frequent breaks and icecream/gelato stops along the way.
Bologna (1 day)
On a recent day trip from Rome, we had the pleasure of exploring the beautiful city of Bologna. Known for its rich culinary traditions, Bologna is a food lover’s paradise. We decided to embark on our adventure on foot and also took advantage of the local bus system to navigate the city.
As we wandered through the charming streets of Bologna, we couldn’t help but be captivated by the warm and friendly atmosphere. The locals were welcoming and eager to share their love for their city and its cuisine. We stumbled upon a small restaurant and struck up a conversation with the owner. When we mentioned that we were there to explore the fabulous cuisine, he couldn’t contain his excitement.
Before we knew it, he was bringing out a plate of delicious local cheeses for us to sample. The flavors were incredible, and we savored each bite. It was a true testament to the generosity and hospitality of the Bolognese people.
Another must-try in Bologna is the mortadella, a type of Italian sausage. We visited a local deli and were amazed by the variety of mortadella available. The shop owner was more than happy to explain the differences between each type and even offered us a taste.
Overall, our day trip to Bologna was a gastronomic adventure we will never forget. The city’s friendly locals, delicious cuisine, and vibrant atmosphere made for an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a food enthusiast or simply looking to immerse yourself in Italian culture, Bologna is a destination that should not be missed.
Florence and Tuscany (4 days)
From Rome, we took a train to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. We marveled at the magnificent Duomo in Florence, visited the Uffizi Gallery, and strolled along the picturesque Ponte Vecchio. Our two days in Florence were filled with art, history, and delicious Tuscan cuisine.
After the hustle and bustle of the cities, we retreated to the picturesque region of Tuscany. We stayed in a beautiful Airbnb and enjoyed the peaceful countryside. We wanted to enjoy the Tuscany sun without doing anything but drinking wine and eating delicious pizza and dessert prepared by our Airbnb host.
Cinque Terre (1 day)
During our recent trip to Italy, we had the opportunity to embark on a delightful day trip to the picturesque region of Cinque Terre. Known for its stunning landscapes and charming coastal villages, this UNESCO World Heritage Site left us in awe.
Our journey began in Florence, where we hopped on a train that would take us directly to Cinque Terre. The scenic train ride allowed us to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Italian countryside as we made our way towards this unique destination.
Upon arriving at Cinque Terre, we were immediately captivated by the beauty that surrounded us. The five colorful fishing villages, perched on the cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea, created a postcard-worthy scene. Each village had its own distinct charm and character, with narrow winding streets, vibrant houses, and stunning coastal views.
Venice (2 days)
Next, we headed to the enchanting city of Venice. Our little one was captivated by the canals, gondolas, and colorful buildings. We took a leisurely boat ride along the Grand Canal, visited St. Mark’s Square, and explored the charming narrow streets. Venice truly felt like a fairytale come to life.
Milan (1 day)
Our final stop was the fashion capital of Italy, Milan. Although we only had one day, we visited the magnificent Duomo, explored the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and enjoyed some shopping. Milan offered a perfect blend of history, culture, and modernity.
Throughout our journey, we relied on trains to travel between cities, which made transportation convenient and hassle-free. Our Airbnb in Tuscany provided a comfortable and authentic experience, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the local culture.
Italy proved to be a wonderful destination for a family vacation. Our two weeks were filled with unforgettable experiences, delicious food, and quality time together. We hope this travel guide inspires you to plan your adventure in Italy with your little one.
